Heavy Equipment Operator is a SIAST applied certificate program. The program provides knowledge and skill development in operating heavy equipment. You must successfully complete the theory courses and two specialty courses. Each student must certify on two pieces of equipment in order to successfully complete the program – minimum of 80 hours per machine; 40 hours in the seat and 40 hours observing the other student operate. Students are at a 2:1 ratio for the machines. The machinery used for training will be determined by the requirements of the work project. Each specialty course focuses on one of the following pieces of equipment: Grader (motor grader), Backhoe, Trackhoe (excavator), Cat (crawler tractor), Payloader (front-end loader)

This SIAST Applied Certificate course provides training in the safe and effective operation of heavy equipment. Students will learn basic maintenance, standard safety practises and develop hands on skills while operating equipment in an actual work project provided by the local community. Excavator, grader and dozer are standard training pieces in all programs however backhoe, loader and as of Spring 2010, Rock Truck training may be available (depending on the nature of the work project). Each student will be certified on two different pieces of heavy equipment. The coursework is divided into approximately 20 hours of classroom theory and 160 hours of practical training at the work site. Course dates and locations will not be set until late Spring 2011. Programs will likely be available in more than one community in the north east. Students who submit applications now will be notified of training dates/locations once they become available.
