Construction is a booming industry in Massachusetts enjoying nearly a 10% rise in employment between July 2015 and July 2016. Construction labors and carpenters represent about 10% of every 1,000 jobs plus another nearly 2% for heavy equipment operators. There is money to be made outside of the Metropolitan area of Boston as well. The city of Framingham actually reported a higher mean salary ($67,483) than Boston ($68,519). Other cities in the state such as Brockton ($65,815), Lynn ($68, 419) and Peabody ($68,078) compensate heavy equipment operators far above the national average.

The IUOE Local 4 Apprenticeship and Training Fund is financed by the union, giving representation to construction workers who seek further training and certification. There is an apprenticeship available which offers on-the-job training as well as hands-on experience with heavy machinery and other construction procedures.
By going through the apprenticeship program, individuals will learn how to operate a CDL grease truck, crawler crane, excavator, clam/gradall, dozer, grader, forklift, skid steer, roller, backhoe loader, loader, and much more. They will also be equipped with the proper maintenance training and will have safety certifications to ensure that the job is done right.
